The Invitation - by Oriahe Mountain Dreamer

The Invitation

by Oriahe Mountain Dreamer

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.  I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are.  I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring the moon.  I want to know if you have touched the center of your sorrow, have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed for fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.  I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.
I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty everyday, and if you can source your life from it's presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon...YES!
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.  I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done for the children.
It doesn't interest me who you are or how you came to be here.  I want to know if you can stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me what or where or with whom you have studied.  I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in empty moments.

I Am Your Friend, Not A Doormat.

A doormat is a person who bends over backwards and forward to please the people in his or her life.  A person who will do whatever it takes to try to make the people in his or her happy, no matter how badly he or she treats her or him. To admit to myself that I have been a doormat for so long is bad enough, but to admit is publicly is humiliating – but it is a time of truth.

Recently, I have been unhappy with the way how one of my friends has been treating me. In the past, I would have let it go by saying it has nothing to do with me; it has something to do with his life. However, this time I could not le it go. This particular friend’s behavior made me look back my other friends from the past who treated me with disrespect.

For the life of me, I could not understand why I let them treat me that way and why I am continuing to let him treat me this way?  Love, care, tolerance, patience, etc. are a good thing to have in a relationship but if doing so cost me my self-respect, and then it has to stop.

If I let someone I care about devaluing me, disrespect me and take me for granted, there is a high possibility that I am doing the same thing to myself. And if that is the case, it means I honestly believe that I don’t deserve to be treated with respect and that I don’t believe I am worthy of kindness and compassion.

How I respond to someone’s manner towards me let them know what is acceptable and not acceptable. If I roll over and take whatever he gives me, the message I am sending to him is clear that I am ok with it. If that is the case, then there is no reason for him to change their behavior, is there? And if I lay under his feet for him to walk all over me, then I have no right to complain when he does.

What I have been asking myself the last couple of hours is why did I chose (intentionally or unintentionally) to be his doormat? Is it because I am people pleasure in general? Is it because I was afraid if I don’t roll over and let him walk all over me, he would not stick around? Or, is it because I want to be selfless and put his feeling before mine?  I am not sure yet, what my reasons are, but two things I know for sure is this. One, this behavior has to stop. Two, it is selfish, not selfless to act this way.

I am not willing anymore to stick my head in the sand expect things to fix themselves. I refuse to lower my expectation so low as to let others to treat me as a doormat is crazy. I know I have to take responsibility and the change has to start with me. He might be blamed in part but the one who is responsible for being ill treated is ME I have to expect the same amount of respect and courtesy from my friends, however, if they are not willing, then I have to let them go.

I am a friend, an equal, not a doormat.

My Life in 5 Chapters
Chapter I
I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in
I am lost . . . I am helpless
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II
I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III
I walk down the same street

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in . . . it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter IV
I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V
I walk down another street

Love Is A Favor That We Bestow On Our Beloved For No Reason

The other day I was listening to Reverend T.D. Jake. He was preaching about ‘favor.’ He said when the Lord favors us; there is no logical explanation to it. It is not because we are good or better than others, or because of our color or gender, it is just a gift. We cannot explain it and we should not try to explain it, we should just be grateful for it.

That made me thinks about love. Sometimes I wonder why I love a certain person, what is it about him which made me love him, what is so special about him, why do I choose to love him over others. Oh, I can list his attributes that I like but another person can have the very same attribute but I don’t love that person, so what gives. Now, I know the reason it is just a favor, a gift.

I don’t know what makes me bestow the gift of love on my beloved but I could not hold the love from him even if I wanted to. It comes from deep inside of me and I have no power over it. When I feel it, it has to be expressed.

I have been in love with a person I have never met in person. We rarely communicate but I know I love this person. Is he handsome, rich, a saint, etc. more than any other men I have ever met, I don’t think so. He is different but not because he is extraordinary person but there is something about him which makes my heart jump. I find myself smiling when I think of him. I find myself praying for his happiness, I want him to have peace and contentment. When something good happen to him, my heart jumps with joy.

I have no idea what the future will bring for us. We might meet or not but one thing is for sure I do love him. Now that I know love is a favor we bestow on our beloved for no other reason, I can love him more and freely.

Accept that some people have no veracity. .

If we have to choose between our instincts and the implied role that a person has taken in our lives, we should choose our instincts.

When considering a relationship of any kind, practice the rule of three regarding the promise or commitment or response that the person makes to us, we should rely on our own any given moment.

*     One lie, one broken promise, one neglected response maybe a misunderstanding.
*     If it happened the second time, it might be a serious mistake on the person’s part.
*     But the third time, he or she lies or broken a promise, or neglect us in any way or treat our feelings with indifference, that is intentional and the person is showing us his or her true devious self – believe it.  Deceit is the linchpin of conscienceless behavior.

It is better for us to cut our loss as soon as possible. Leaving might be hard but it would be easier and less costly now than later.

Compliments are lovely, especially when they are true and sincere but be careful of flattery. Flattery is the counterfeit charm; it appears to our ego in an unrealistic way. It is meant to massage our ego.

If necessary, we should redefine our concept of respect. Don’t confuse fear with respect.

Don’t join the game; intrigue is the sociopath’s tools. The best way to protect ourselves from this person is to avoid any kind of contact and communication.

We should question our tendencies to trust easily. Respect should be reserved for the kind and morally courageous. Pity – is another socially valuable response and it should be reserved for innocent people who are in genuine pain or who have fallen or misfortune.

If we find ourselves pitting someone who consistently hurt us or anyone else, who actively campaigns for our sympathy, chances are close to 100% that we are dealing with a person who has no integrity.

Thank You For Letting Me Love You.

My second year of college I met a man at a church BBQ. While everyone was socializing and eating, this man was sitting at the corner alone and I went to talk to him. After introducing myself, I asked him why he was sitting all by himself and why he was sad. He was a little surprised by my perception; I guess the young are not often known for their perception.

He said that he and his wife grew up in the area and then moved to Iowa. But every year, they would drive down to Ohio to attend the church BBQ because that is where they met the first time. His #wife passed away five years ago and this is the first time that he came to the BBQ.

He told me that he was 57 years old, he has three grown children and one of his daughters still lives in the area with her husband and children. He introduced me to her and her family. When the function was over, we exchanged phone numbers and address and we promised to keep in touch.

He kept his word and started sending me letters. I loved receiving his letters because they were full of stories. He wrote to me about his days at the farm, about his animals, his neighbors, the weather, etc. Reading his letters was like reading a story book. Even though he claimed that he has never written letters to people and that he was not good at it, I knew different.

I was introduced to his town and the people who lived in it. He wrote to me about how their pastor enjoyed the children more than the adults. He wrote to me how the general store owner’s wife was a nag like Mrs. Olsen. He told me about his dog ‘Milly.’ – Who has only obeyed his wife and once she passed away, she became the boss. How Dr. Styne, the #town doctor, is a stern but kind man who cares and takes care of everybody.

At the beginning, I tried to keep up with my #correspondence but #lack of self-confidence stoped me. He understood my problem without me having to explain it to him. He told me that he #enjoys sharing his stories with me, unless I get sick and tired of it, he would like to keep doing it and I was happy to let him.

His letters arrive on the 8th of each month and sometimes if there is a holiday or if it is my birthday or if I have done well in class, I will get a card, money, gift, etc. from him. If it is summer vacation or any  other school holiday, I would let him know and he would send the letters to wherever I was.

One day, after two and half years of this,  I noticed that I did not get a letter from him and tried to call him to find out if he was ok, but there was no answer. I told myself maybe he went on vacation and forgot to tell me, or maybe something happened but I was sure he would call and all will be all. But it did not. By the 12th of the month, I got a letter from him and I thank God and opened the letter with excitement. However, even as I was opening it, there was something different about it, I cannot say what but I felt it in my heart.

The letter started with

‘My dear girl,

If you are reading this letter, it means I have gone to meet my maker. I wrote this  letter it to my daughter so she can send it to you once I passed away. I know how much you love me and care about me and I did not want to wonder what  happened to me, or wonder if you have said or done to upset me - as if you are capable of that.

I cannot tell you what your #friendship meant to me. You gave my life purpose; you comfort me with your quite smile and words. I wish my Clair has met you. The two of you would have hit it off. If she had been alive, I would have asked you to come and see the farm instead of telling you about it. But since I live alone, I did not want to make you uncomfortable by asking you to come and stay with me. Some days, I wish I had but it is late now.

My dear, I want to thank you for #letting me #love you. I know you felt guilty because I was the one who did most of the writing but that was the most #precious #gift you have given me. #Love which is not accepted is like a curse but you accepted it with an #open-heart. You made me feel special and worthy of your time. You never complained about my calls or letters. I never understood why people in sales say smile while talking on the phone because the person on the other side can hear it. I am just a simple farmer but you made me see that because every time we talked, I felt your smile.

Again, I would say thank you for letting me love you. It is with great sorrow and pain I am saying goodbye to you, my dear. I hope you would find comfort, like me, in the knowledge that we will meet in our Father’s house. Not too soon, I hope. I want you always to remember how much I loved you. “

This man who thought me so much about #unconditional-love was not done with me. Even after he passed away, he blessed me with another lesson, when love is offered, accepting it is a gift for the giver. I never thought of it that way before that, but since then I tried to thank the people who accepted my gift of love as much as I can. That is their way of #reciprocating my love for them.

I hope, if you have never thanked the people who have accepted your love, you would take this opportunity to thank them.   They are precious and few, please do it today.

God willing, one day, I will see him and let him know how special he made me feel.
